The Serena Fund

Serena’s memory lives on in the hearts of hundreds of Schipperke owners, breeders, rescuers – and just plain friends.  Much of her early support came from non-Schip owners who simply agreed with us that Serena deserved a chance.

The Serena Fund is dedicated to honor her memory by raising funds to help sustain the lives of other Schips at risk – those “unadoptables” who have a chance of well-earned survival if the dedication -- and funds -- are there to support them.  The Serena Shop intends to remain “open” as The Serena Fund as long as it’s viable, with the specific purpose of supporting unadoptable Schipperkes in foster care who need ongoing medical support to sustain their lives. It most recently supported another diabetic.

Serena is special, but hardly unique.  Serena’s story is playing itself out again right now in Tennessee.  A lovely old gal, now named Margot, was a “night drop” like Serena, at a shelter in Elizabethtown.  She was in equally bad or worse shape.  Chris Pavin picked her up and worked with her for ten days, and Julie Burns has become her “permanent foster.”  Alas, she has bladder cancer from neglect of an infection, and it is minimally treatable because of her age.  The prognosis is “months,” and Julie will experience the same unbelievable bond with Margot during that time as we did with Serena.   The Serena Fund most recently supported another diabetic dog, Gemma, in Virginia.

Margot and Gemma are just two great reasons to support The Serena Fund.

Serena’s bonus days may or may not have been the best of her life.   But certainly they were her most valuable.   That’s why we want to keep The Serena Fund going:  to supply medical support and love to Schips who might otherwise be written off.
