Available Rescued Schipperkes
SchipperkeRescue.net lists brief summaries and photos of the Schipperkes that are currently available through our rescue program. SRN places our dogs in verified foster homes where the dog receives all required medical care, updating of vaccinations, proper diet and exercise, and socialization and training. SRN works directly with the foster care provider to monitor the progress of the dog and to determine when the dog is ready for placement in a permanent home. SRN does not accept dogs into our foster care program if they have a history of biting or develop behavior issues during foster care.
From time to time, SRN provides courtesy listing for Schipperkes that are with their original owners or in some other home that is not one of our verified foster homes. Such listings are noted as "COURTESY LISTING". If you are interested in learning more about one of these dogs, you should contact the foster care provider and seek as much information as possible. SRN does some pre-screening of these dogs, however, SRN assumes no responsibility for health or behavior issues for "courtesy listing" dogs. Adoption of any "courtesy listing" dog is between the owner and the adopting party, and any claims regarding health and/or behavior are the responsibility of the owner.

PEDRO - Hoboken
-
NJ
|

Please meet Pedro !
Pedro is 9 years old. Neutered and up to date on vaccinations. Pedro has been displaced due to family death and illness. He is up to date on vaccinations and on heartworm prevention He has a fatty tumor over his right shoulder that has been checked and is not a medical concern, but is noticeable.
A word from Pedro's foster mom:
Pedro is a sweet older dog with lots of life left. He has been socialized with other dogs and does not show any aggression, but he is weary of strangers at first. He will join you on the sofa if you sit for too long and you will soon be his best friend. We are not sure how he would do with cats, and he is not great with energetic puppies. Although he likes to play, he does not play much with my other dogs as much as they try to engage him.
At first, he didn't understand the dog door, but he learned quickly and proved that you can teach an older dog new tricks. He is not a bed hog, and sleeps the whole night and often has to be coaxed out of bed long after everyone else has left. But don't let his lazy "attitude" fool you. His favorite pastime is collecting all his toys and stashing them on the sofa or making a pile of them outside on the deck. I am still trying to figure out who is borrowing my shoes . . . He also loves to chew on the small rawhide twists.
He does well on a leash, but he is a barker as most Schips are. He will even bark when he feels that your not paying enough attention to him. I find that a good rub and a treat is all he wants. When he is excited, he does spin especially at meal time.
Overall, he would do well in a calmer household and would make a great companion for an older person. If your looking for a dog to just hang out with you, he is the one.

WILSON - Lexington
-
SC
|
Please meet Wilson !
This is Wilson. His elderly owner passed away, and the family was unable to keep him. He's about 5 years old, neutered, HW negative, and up-to-date on vaccinations. He does have a grade III/IV heart murmur, however. He doesn't have to go on any medication yet but will have to be monitored for any changes to his heart.
Apparently because of his situation, he's used to doing his own thing and doesn't seek much attention from anyone. He also isn't used to having his personal space invaded (my dogs and cats didn't know such a thing existed!) and gets a little growly when they get in his space. He's great with people though, no aggression at all, just happy to hang out in the room with us.
He loves to go for walks and car rides, although his leash manners need work!
Because of his issues with personal space, he is need of an adoptive home that doesn't have multiple pets.

KENYA - Millersville
-
MD
|
This is a courtesy listing only. This dog is not a part of SchipperkeRescue.net, Inc.
Kenya is a bright, curious, and energetic female schipperke. She weighs 14-15 lbs, is spayed, and will be 8 yrs old at the end of 2012. She grew up living with a family of four but she now lives with just one of us and really needs more company and activity.
This is a friendly and affectionate little girl, but she is also very independent and likes to do her own thing. She is very clever and resourceful about getting what she wants (like food). She tends to be shy around strangers and larger dogs. She is generally more interested in exploring her surroundings than playing with other dogs. She barks if a situation makes her nervous and she “talks” when she is hungry, but she is generally a very quiet dog. She likes children and warms up to women quicker than men. She has not lived in a household with other pets; it is unknown how she would react to cats, for example. She would be submissive around a dominant dog.
She loves neck and ear rubs, a peanut butter-stuffed Kong, trips to the park, and being chased for fun. She dislikes grooming generally (toe-trimming, brushing), loud storms/fireworks, and facial hair or hats on men. She has chewed up any bedding we ever got her, so she sleeps at the foot of the bed or on other furniture in the bedroom.
Kenya is crate trained and accustomed to being crated when left at home alone. She has lived her whole life with access to a large yard with an Invisible Fence. She is accustomed to several daily walks. If she doesn’t get enough exercise or stimulation, she does get restless and may get into things she shouldn’t.
She is trained to all the common commands and she obeys well, but she is also impulsive and forgets herself. She is easily distracted by food!
Kenya is in good health and is up to date on all her shots and heartworm meds. She does have issues with urinary urgency and is on a weekly medication that comes from a compounder (a $20 prescription lasts 6 months) to help manage it. She will sometimes pee inside the house if no one responds to her efforts to get outside. (She would do great with a doggy-door; we never had a good place to install one).
All placement arrangements, all pet ownership responsibilities and legal liabilities are solely between the present dog owner/owners and the person/persons acquiring the dog from them. *
SchipperkeRescue.net, Inc cannot be held responsible for any damages or injuries occurred when meeting, visiting, during pre adoption or post adoption of a courtesy listed dog.
We highly recommend no one adopt a dog that is not proven to be vaccinated for rabies.

TRAVELER - Lancaster
-
PA
|

Meet Traveler

This little stinker is definitely an alpha and ALL teenage puppy. Loves to play/fight, chase and play catch-me-if-you-can! He is also quite the snuggler and wants to be by your side all the time. He is still a little mouthy, although we are working on that. He's not snapping; he's using his mouth as a grabby hand.
Crates: not possible. Must have been kept in a crate and roughly thrust in there. Will fight and snap if forced into one. For traveling, it is better he be tethered.
Barking: YES, but only when seeing people walking dogs down the street. It appears it's not so much of a warning as it is, "I wanna go out, too!" He does love to go for long walks. He thinks a leash is his best friend. But don't try to leave a harness on him when he's not out for his walk. He'll chew it off before you can turn around.
He does not like to be picked up, especially from the front. In addition to being alpha, I think he was roughly handled. We are working on showing him that being picked up can be nice, but do it from the side for the time being.
Part alpha/part fear, he does not like being on his back in your arms. He will tolerate it with belly scritches for about 30 seconds, then he's struggling to get down.
The only time he snaps is when he is cornered. Here, again, he may have been pulled out of a crate or other places very roughly. He calms down immediately if you have a leash in hand. However, some of the places he gets into (foot wells of the car, etc.) don't allow for easy hand access. I've found that a bungee cord with a plastic hook on the end looks like a leash to him, so he will accept your putting it on, but it is easier to get hooked on his collar in tight places. Pulling gently on it will bring him right out where you can get a leash hooked to his collar.
He really is a lovely little dog who just needs having it reinforced that he is NOT the ruler of all he surveys, but he needs to be handled with love. He is also a jumper and a climber. He can jump a 30" baby gate and will climb gates with hard wire mesh. He really just wants to be where you are.
He is fully housetrained. When he first arrives, he will bark at a door to be let in (only in a fenced area - he's a runner if let loose). He will learn a pet door quickly if you have one to a fenced area.
On the whole he gets along with other Schips. I don't know about other breeds or cats. And ideal situation would be with a younger alpha female to help keep in him line. Being young, he wants to play all the time and will drive older dogs nuts with his energy.
Traveler has a wonderful, espressive face with the most beautiful amber eyes and the most adorable stub of a tail (yes, it appears natural). And he loves to lie at your feet, lick your bare feet, legs, whataver is available!

KEKE - Loveland
-
CO
|
Meet Keke!
Keke is a 9-10 year old female. She weighs about 15 pounds, but may be slightly overweight. Keke's fur looks a little funny right now, as somebody shaved off her coat back in December or January. Her current foster family reports that Keke is very friendly and sociable with all people, however, she barks initially when meeting new people. She seems to especially like men. It is not known how Keke will do with young children, however, she has responded in an extremely friendly nature with teenagers who have interacted with her. Keke loves to swim and walks on leash. She was originally crate-trained, but now cuddles up in her foster owner's bed. Keke's foster family does not have any cats, but when she is in the yard, she sure likes to bark at the neighbor's cats and would love to chase them.
Keke's foster family reports that she seems to have a slight loss of eyesight that is apparent in darker conditions. She has two small benign fatty tumors that are not a health concern. Keke may be starting to experience minor arthritis pain in her joints.
